Every euthanasia visit is unique, and we walk alongside families to answer questions, explain the process, and help you feel confident in your decisions.

When is Euthanasia the Right Choice?

Euthanasia is often considered when a pet is suffering from a terminal illness, chronic pain, or severe injury that cannot be comfortably managed. Signs that it may be time include:

Major medical diagnosis or consultation with your veterinarian
Uncontrolled pain or discomfort
Loss of appetite or inability to eat/drink
Mobility challenges or incontinence
Loss of interest in favorite activities

Your veterinarian can help assess your pet's quality of life and guide you through the decision-making process.

We do not offer behavioral euthanasia and do not euthanize pets that have bitten or scratched within the last 10 days.

Quality of Life Exams (If You're Unsure)

If you are uncertain whether it is time to say goodbye, we offer quality-of-life examinations. During this visit, our veterinarian will assess your pet's comfort, pain level, mobility, appetite, and overall well-being, and discuss what we are seeing with you honestly and compassionately. This appointment is meant to provide guidance and clarity, not pressure. Euthanasia is never required during a quality of life exam, and many families find reassurance in having a professional assessment to help them make an informed decision when the time feels right.

Calling & Registration

While we are a walk-in clinic, calling ahead allows our team to prepare for your visit and prioritize our comfort room, designed to feel more like home.

For existing clients: We can ensure your account is up to date and complete paperwork in advance.
For new clients: We can send a registration form via text to complete at home, or paper forms will be available upon arrival.

Arrival & Comfort Room

Families may enter through the main lobby or call us from the parking lot to come in through our private back entrance. A team member can escort you directly to the comfort room for privacy.

The comfort room is softly lit and furnished with a couch, chair, and dog bed. Treats, wet food, and snacks are available for your pet, and you are welcome to bring favorite blankets, toys, or other comforting items. Handicap parking is available, and our staff can assist in bringing your pet inside if needed.

Paperwork & Check-Out

A team member will review necessary paperwork, discuss sedation options, and answer any questions. We prefer to complete payment and check-out at this stage, so families are not required to handle these details afterward while emotional.

Choosing to Be Present

It is your choice whether to be present during euthanasia. Our staff will explain each option so you can make the decision that feels right.

If present: An IV catheter is typically placed either in the comfort room or treatment area. Sedation is administered first to pets needing it for pain or anxiety. You remain with your pet until they become sleepy, ensuring a calm and peaceful process.
If not present: Our team will stay with and comfort your pet throughout the procedure.

Time With Your Pet

You may spend as much time as needed with your pet before, during, and after the procedure. Children, other family members, and pets are welcome. A doorbell in the comfort room allows you to signal when you are ready for the procedure or need assistance. Staff may check in occasionally to ensure you have everything you need, but there is no rush.

The Procedure

When ready, notify a staff member or ring the comfort room doorbell. Our veterinarian, sometimes accompanied by a support team member, will administer a sedative first if it has not already been given. Once your pet is relaxed, a second injection is given to allow them to pass peacefully. The doctor will confirm your pet's passing and allow you as much time as needed afterward.

Aftercare Options

We encourage families to discuss aftercare wishes in advance. Options include:

Private Cremation

Your pet is cremated individually, and their ashes are returned to you in an urn of your choice—either a Blue Decorative Metal Urn, a Tan Decorative Metal Urn, a Carved Wood Urn, a Cedar Memorial Urn, or a Blue Scattering Tube Urn with Paw Prints. The urns can be personalized with your pet's name or nickname engraved. A certificate of cremation is included. Turnaround time is typically about one week. Changes and personalizations can be made within 48 hours using a link sent to your email shortly after your visit with us. You may also explore additional urn and keepsake options on the cremation company's website, Trusted Journey.

Communal Cremation

Your pet is cremated with other pets, and ashes are not returned. A clay paw print and fur clipping are included. Ashes are respectfully placed in a communal burial lot at Trusted Journey's Grafton Pet Cemetery.

Home Burial

Your pet can be taken home in a blanket, carrier, coffin box, or compostable bag for burial on your property. Verify local laws regarding home burial before proceeding.

Keepsakes

One clay paw print and fur clipping are included with each service.

If you are having your pet cremated: Trusted Journey will provide the paw print and fur clipping. The clay paw prints can be personalized with your pet's name or nickname engraved.
If you are taking your pet home for burial: We will provide the paw print and fur clipping on the same day.

Memorial Ideas

Scatter their ashes in a meaningful place.
Create a place to keep special items such as their urn, collar, ID tag, toys, or favorite photos.
Have a key chain, jewelry, ornament, or other keepsake made that can hold some of your pet's ashes, hair, or whiskers.
Plant a flower or tree where you choose to scatter or bury their ashes, or in their favorite part of the yard.
Create a photo album or digital scrapbook that includes some favorite memories.
Make a donation in memory of your pet to a cause that is special to you.
Volunteer time at a shelter, barn, or rescue.
Have a stuffed animal or a clone of your pet created.
